## Job Summary
The Division of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine is seeking a Research Laboratory Specialist for an existing laboratory located at the VA Medical Center Research Building. The Researcher will participate in ongoing research in a cell and molecular biology laboratory. This will involve a wide variety of techniques from the fields of molecular biology, protein chemistry, immunology, and cell biology.
## Responsibilities
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Under the direction of the principal investigator, initiate and perform experiments entailing the following components:
Isolate leukocyte subsets from peripheral blood of volunteers and patients.
Isolate cell populations from mice.
Isolate RNA for RT-PCR
Prepare fungal cultures and perform experimental infections in mice with fungal pathogens
Prepare cells for immunofluorescence assays, Western blot analyses, moleular analysis, perform assays, and interpret results.
Perform routine proliferation, killing and ELISA assays, RT-PCT, Western blot anaysis, analyze results, and trouble shoot difficulties.
Perform various stimulated cell culture conditons over protracted time periods.
Supervise the cell culture facility to provide cells for studies.
Act as the Laboratory Manager
Day to day supervision of more junior technicians, role includes instruction in performance of test procedures, and quality control evaluations .
Coordination of all projects, including ordering of materials, ongoing in the laboratory .
Coordination of collaborative projects with other laboratories. Ensure the fair division of labor and productivity of joint projects, as specified by the PI.
Prepare media, buffers, solutions.
Assist in the preparation of manuscripts by writing materials and methods sections, providing accurate laboratory records, and supervise the purchasing and production of laboratory supplies.
## Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a health science discipline. Master's and/or PhD in biological sciences preferred.
Previous experience in a studying molecular biology, protein chemistry, immunology, and cell biology.
General Understanding of biological and biochemical principles and practices
Experience and proficiency with general biochemical laboratory techniques and instrumentation, such as preparing solutions, using analytical balances, pH meters, spectrophotometers, coulter counters, scintillation counters, and centrifuges.
Experience in staining cells with fluorescent monoclonal antibodies and analyzing stained cells.
Knowledge of principles of working with low-level radioisotopes.
Experience in cell culture techniques (human and animal).
Ability to work independently in experimental design and analysis.
Ability to work effectively with supervisors and peers.
Experience in order and maintaining supplies and equipment.
Quantitative PCR, ELISA, Western Blot, work RNAi/gene silencing experience required.
## Work Schedule
40 hours, full-time. Days, Monday through Friday. Hours are negotiable and based on research needs.
## Additional Information
Located at the Ann Arbor VA Medical Center. Although this position will involve employment with compensation by the University of Michigan, it requires as well a Without-Compensation (WOC) appointment by the Department of Veterans Affairs, and hence a federal background check and mandatory drug testing is required.
