# Research Tech Intermediate
## Job Summary
Highly motivated individual sought for a research technician intermediate position in a basic science/translational laboratory in the Molecular Mechanisms of Disease Program, Biomedical Science Research Building, Division of Hematology/Oncology, Department of Internal Medicine, University of Michigan School of Medicine.
There are approximately 5,800 new cases of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) per year. The survival rate of adults with ALL has remained at 30-40%. ALL kills more children than any other cancer. Determining the origin and evolution of ALL may lead to novel targeted therapies that are more effective and less toxic than current protocols.
This position is suitable for individuals who want to have their own project, which will be related to other projects with a team environment. This position will not require presenting the project in scientific forums or scientific writing. However, if he or she desires, this position could be modified for those individuals who desire concentrated training in biomedical research; for example, to become highly competitive for graduate school or medical school. For these motivated individuals, authorship on papers, traveling to research conferences, reading the literature and scientific presentations, and shadowing the PI in hematology clinic will be possibilities.
## Responsibilities
The research technician will run his/her own projects under the supervision of the PI, assist graduate students/postdocs, and supervise undergraduate students in research projects studying the molecular pathogenesis of leukemia. We use mice, primary human samples, and cell lines as model systems. Experiments will focus on understanding the molecular pathways that drive hematopoiesis and transformation into hematopoietic malignancies.
Experimental duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Genomic sequencing analysis of leukemia samples and cell lines
Breeding and management of the mouse colony
Bone marrow transplantation
Histopathological analysis of leukemia
Retroviral/lentiviral transduction of oncogenes and RNAi into stem cells/cell lines
In vitro culture of human leukemic cells and developing mouse thymocytes
Flow cytometric analysis of hematopoietic subsets and cell sorting
High throughput drug screening
ChIP, co-immunoprecipitation, qPCR, Western, and reporter assays
Recombinant DNA Cloning
Non-experimental duties (less than 10% of time) include, but are not limited to, the following:
Purchasing of laboratory supplies and equipment
Maintenance of laboratory equipment
Preparation of solutions and media
Preparation and maintenance of frozen stocks
Accurate record keeping
