DUTIES AND
Responsibilities:
The materials engineer is responsible for organizing and conducting analytical and/or physical tests on polymeric, elastomeric and thermoplastic materials so as to provide materials engineering solutions to customers, engineering or manufacturing. The materials engineer is also responsible for ensuring that any data leaving the materials department via customer report, engineering report, manufacturing report, or publication is of the utmost integrity.The materials engineer is responsible for actively participating in the appropriate Product Development Groups, professional organizations (ACS, AIChE, etc.), and manufacturing or engineering task forces. As a member of these associations or technical groups, he/she is expected to provide insight and direction on the present requirements and future needs regarding materials or materials processes, and support customer engineering or manufacturing needs.
Participate in Product Development or Focus Groups team meetings
If the Materials Development Manager considers necessary, must complete a Basic Rubber Technology course through the American Chemical Society (ACS) and one outside training course in a relevant area
Understands the effects of fillers and chemicals used in the compounding and curing of all elastomer types. Can predict and explain properties based on filler and curing system used.
Possess a thorough understanding of the chemistry of current and possible future trends in fuels and lubricants and how these trends will affect all Materials used in the materials department.
Can utilize thorough understanding of chemistry, physics, and mechanical engineering to distinguish between materials problems and design problems.
Works closely with customers, engineering, and manufacturing to make recommendations for specific material needs to solve present problems.
Capable of organizing, conducting, and reporting on research projects or programs without assistance of a senior co-worker.
Responsible for reviewing technical journals and data bases to stay current on issues in the industry.
Capable of using standard statistical and data reduction techniques to prepare test or research reports.
Maintains organized reports, records, and history of projects.
Stays abreast of the corporate business plan and prioritizes projects to achieve business plan goals.
Maintains an educational and supportive relationship with other coworkers in the department.
Generates a minimum of one paper or project per year for trade or industry journal publication.
Each employee has the authority to initiate action to prevent the occurrence of non-conformities relating to the product, process and quality system and has the authority to stop further work on non-conforming suspect product until the deficiency or conditions have been corrected.
Capable of providing support as requested by supervisor.
REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelors of Science or higher in the following sciences (Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material or Polymer Science). Biology, Mechanical Engineering or Metallurgy is acceptable if course-work included any of the following organic, inorganic and polymer chemistry.
5 - 8 years minimum of relevant work experience
Possess presentation skills capable of giving presentations in large forums (i.e., ACS conferences, Organization staff meetings, etc.)
Possess a strong working knowledge of organic and polymer chemistry; capable of solving basic problems with this knowledge. Capable of drawing the structures of all the materials used in the materials department.
Demonstrate a understanding of mechanics of materials and dynamics from mechanical engineering curriculum
Possess a thorough understanding of all instruments, test methods, and test results in the materials laboratory.
