Summary The Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) collaborates with faculty, staff and students across the three University of Michigan campuses to catalyze, support and safeguard research, scholarship and creative practice that serves the world.
OVPR is seeking an experienced communicator who possesses a unique blend of analytical skills and an exceptional ability to translate complex topics for a general audience.
This individual will be responsible for communicating on topics ranging from generative artificial intelligence to computational medicine and climate modeling to enhancing the scientific and societal impact of data science and AI through responsible research.
This individual can effectively interpret complex topics and present them in a clear, concise and engaging manner to both technical and non-technical audiences.
In partnership with U-M stakeholders across a variety of disciplines, this individual will work with the Michigan Institute for Computational Discovery and Engineering (MICDE) and Michigan Institute for Data Science (MIDAS) to promote the impact and importance of research, scholarship and creative practice.
Their remaining effort will support OVPR and its other reporting units as part of a broader effort to elevate the university's reputation as a global leader in academic research, scholarship and creative practice.
The communications specialist will report to the OVPR Director of Digital Marketing and Communications, and they will often collaborate with other members of the university community to expand and strengthen U-M research communications efforts.
About MICDE and MIDAS MICDE is an interdisciplinary research institute that focuses on the development and innovative use of mathematical algorithms and models on high-performance computers (HPC) to support basic and applied research and education across a wide range of disciplines in science and engineering.

edu/ Responsibilities Develop and implement strategic communications plans that aim to generate increased awareness around important issues related to MICDE and MIDAS.
Ensure communications strategies are consistent and reflect each unit's strategic vision.
Develop and manage a variety of digital communications tools, including (but not limited to) websites, newsletters and social media channels.
Work with leadership across MICDE and MIDAS to identify, refine and promote key messages that are pertinent to each unit.
Write and edit communications materials to proactively inform and engage internal and external audiences around key resources, research findings and events.
Develop leadership communications, including strategic messaging and presentations.
Build relationships with communicators within OVPR and across U-M to leverage channels for promoting key research priorities.
Plan, develop and strategically utilize analytics tools to gain insight into the effective use of communications channels and content.
Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism or a related field Proven experience in a communications or public relations role Exceptional writing, editing and ability to work strategically with leadership Strong organizational and project management skills Ability to manage multiple projects with varying deadlines Experience with digital communication tools, including websites, newsletters and social media channels Knowledge of analytics tools and ability to analyze communication effectiveness Desired Qualifications Experience in a research environment or academic setting is preferred.
Familiarity with the University of Michigan and its research units is also preferred.
Experience with digital media campaigns, content creation and management of projects' progress toward completion.
Experience with analytics tools to unlock the power of data and the development of interactive dashboards to inspire effective communications and business decisions.
The ideal candidate for this position would possess an understanding of technical research-related topics and trends.
